About Melissa Wood
Patient Advocate & End-of-Life Doula
My name is Melissa Wood, and I am a Patient Advocate and End-of-Life (Death) Doula supporting individuals and families as they navigate aging, serious illness, caregiving, and complex medical decisions.
With more than 25+ years of experience in healthcare, I help people feel informed, supported, and less overwhelmed — often long before hospice or end-of-life care is discussed. My work bridges the gap between medical systems and the human experience of illness, ensuring that individuals and families feel heard, respected, and empowered throughout the process.
A Personal Understanding of Illness, Caregiving, and Loss
My path to patient advocacy and end-of-life work is deeply personal.
I was born to older parents, and serious illness entered my life at a young age. In my early twenties, both of my parents became ill at the same time. My mother was diagnosed with two forms of cancer that did not respond to chemotherapy or radiation and passed away within a year. My father lived for many years with Alzheimer’s disease in a care home before his death.
Shortly after my mother passed, I was diagnosed myself with stage III cervical cancer at the age of 24. After witnessing the physical and emotional toll aggressive treatments had taken on my mother, I chose a different approach for my own care — opting for surgery and immersing myself in nutrition, herbs, and natural therapies. I fully recovered, and the cancer has never returned.
These experiences shaped my understanding of how frightening, isolating, and confusing serious illness can be — especially when families are forced to make decisions quickly and without clear guidance.
Professional Background in Healthcare & Patient Advocacy
Before entering healthcare, I worked as a computer programmer in the oil and gas industry. While technically successful, the work felt disconnected from what mattered most to me.
In my early thirties, ongoing health challenges led me to a Naturopathic Doctor, introducing me to a model of care that prioritized listening, education, and whole-person support. That experience changed the direction of my life.
I returned to school to study Naturopathy, eventually working for more than eight years in a clinical setting and later running my own private practice for another eight years. Since 2000, I have also been a Licensed Massage Therapist and Massage Therapy Instructor in Texas, supporting clients through hands-on, body-based care.
Across these roles, I have spent decades:
-
Supporting patients through complex healthcare systems
-
Advocating for informed consent and patient-centered care
-
Helping individuals and families understand treatment options
-
Providing emotional support during times of illness and transition
Why I Offer Patient Advocacy & End-of-Life Doula Services
Throughout my career, I witnessed many individuals and families suffer unnecessarily — not only from illness itself, but from confusion, lack of information, and emotional overwhelm within the healthcare system.
While my training as an End-of-Life Doula allows me to support individuals in the final stages of life, much of my work takes place well before that point. I work with people navigating:
-
Aging and chronic illness
-
Caregiving for parents or loved ones
-
Complex medical decisions
-
Planning ahead for future care needs, including end-of-life care
I believe that when people receive compassionate guidance and patient advocacy earlier, end-of-life care becomes less frightening and more humane.
My Philosophy of Care
I believe that:
-
Patient advocacy improves both emotional and medical outcomes
-
No one should feel rushed, pressured, or alone when facing serious illness
-
Emotional and spiritual support are as essential as medical care
-
End-of-life planning is most effective when it begins early
I provide non-judgmental, inclusive support, honoring all belief systems, identities, family structures, and traditions. My role is not to tell you what to do — but to help you understand your options, ask meaningful questions, and make decisions that align with your values.
How I Help Individuals & Families
As a Patient Advocate and End-of-Life Doula, I offer support that may include:
-
Navigating medical systems and healthcare decisions
-
Caregiver support and guidance
-
Education around serious illness and end-of-life planning
-
Emotional and practical support for patients and families
-
Collaboration with hospice teams when appropriate
Whether you are planning ahead, caring for a loved one, or facing uncertainty about what comes next, my goal is to help you feel grounded, supported, and less alone.
